Understanding Therapy: A Journey Towards Healing

Updated: 5 days ago

I've been working in private practice since 2012, having started my therapy training in 2008. Prior to this, I worked in the NHS as a nurse from 1977 until 2007, with a short break to have my children. My background as a nurse is invaluable in my work as a therapist. It allows me to understand health and well-being from a holistic perspective. This understanding helps me support clients in advocating for themselves when they navigate the NHS.

The Connection Between Mental and Physical Health

Mental health distress often coexists with physical or somatic stress. I usually find that once a person's mental health improves, their physical symptoms tend to diminish as well. The power of therapy lies in feeling heard by someone who can truly listen, understand, and respect your lived experience. This connection helps individuals make sense of what has happened to them.

The aim of Transactional Analysis (TA) is to help people achieve autonomy and homonomy. These concepts, defined by Berne, encompass awareness, spontaneity, and the capacity for intimacy.

The Convenience of Online Therapy

I work online via Zoom, which means you don't have to travel for appointments. If you need to leave home for business, your therapy can come with you, provided you can access a quiet, confidential space where you won't be overheard. I work with clients across the UK and into Europe, and occasionally the US, time differences permitting.

Navigating Life Transitions

I also offer therapy to individuals seeking more from life. Many clients come to me after experiencing major life transitions. These can include job redundancy, the start or end of a long-term relationship, or children leaving home for college or university. Others may be dealing with the bereavement of a family member or friend. Feelings of being lost, rudderless, or lacking direction can also be reasons to consider therapy.

Taking the First Step

If you are considering therapy, please call or message me to discuss your options. I offer a 15-20 minute free, no-obligation chat to see if we can work together. If you decide to proceed, we can plan together what you would like to achieve in therapy. The importance of caring for yourself has never been so crucial in today’s busy world. Make yourself your priority!
