The Importance of Mental Health Support
Mental health is often overlooked, yet it plays a critical role in our overall well-being. According to the World Health Organisation, one in four people will experience a mental health issue at some point in their lives. Seeking help is a vital step toward healing. This summer, I realised that asking for support is not a sign of weakness but rather a courageous decision that can lead to recovery and growth.
Discovering St Andrews Counselling
When I first learned about St Andrews Counselling and Psychotherapy, I was drawn to their approach to therapy. They focus on creating a safe and nurturing environment, which was very appealing to me. After doing some research and reading about transactional analysis, I reached out to explore their mental health support.
Making First Contact
I saw I had a few options for contacting them; their website had a contact form, as well as an email address and telephone number. I decided to fill in the contact form, and Carol got back to me within a few hours using the email address I provided. She was warm and friendly and put me at ease. We arranged a time to speak on the phone. This was a 15-minute call; I called her, and we had a chat about what I was looking for from therapy, whether I had had therapy before, and what my experience was.
She told me about how she uses transactional analysis, or TA, and how this would be useful in working with what I was struggling with. We asked one another a few other questions, and I felt seen and understood. She asked me if I wanted to think about whether I'd like to work with her and to get back to her. She also suggested I might like to call a few other therapists and emphasised the importance of compatibility and my sense of being connected and accepted.
I decided to book a first appointment, and Carol sent me an intake form to fill out. This form was all about my history, family, contact details, and what I wanted to work on first. She also sent me the CORE-OM, a questionnaire to fill out, which would serve as the baseline to measure my well-being, functioning, problems, mood, and potential risk factors. Carol sent me a document about the business terms and conditions, FAQs, links to resources, and limits to confidentiality. As Carol works online via Zoom, she sent me the Zoom link for my first session.
My First Session: A Safe Space
Starting my first session, I felt a mix of anxiety and hope. The warm, inviting atmosphere of the counselling space online immediately comforted me. Carol welcomed me with compassion and understanding, creating a safe space for me to express my thoughts and feelings.

During our initial session, I shared my struggles with anxiety, stress, and feelings of isolation. Speaking openly without fear of judgment was liberating. I learned that acknowledging my feelings is the first step toward healing. Carol's empathetic listening and insightful questions left me feeling understood, and I left that session feeling emotionally lighter.
Understanding Psychotherapy
A key aspect of my journey was becoming familiar with the psychotherapy available at St Andrews Counselling. They offer a tailored approach using TA, which is a humanistic therapy. Humanistic therapy emphasises the individual's inherent capacity for growth, self-understanding, and self-acceptance. It focuses on the present and the person's experience, encouraging self-exploration and personal responsibility. The method provided me with specific tools to support my mental health journey.
Building Coping Strategies
As the weeks progressed, I started developing effective coping strategies guided by my therapist. Together, we practised exercises that encouraged self-reflection and mindfulness. I learned to identify my personal triggers, such as busy environments and negative self-talk. With this awareness, I could implement techniques like deep breathing and positive affirmations when faced with challenging situations.
The Power of Self-Care
Summer is synonymous with relaxation, and I embraced this concept fully. With the encouragement of St Andrews Counselling, I prioritised self-care, dedicating at least 30 minutes each day to activities that nourished my mental well-being. For instance, I started journaling every morning to process my thoughts and feelings. I also made time for meditation and spent weekends exploring local parks and nature trails.

These simple practices not only improved my mood but also deepened my connection with myself. I recognised that taking time for self-care is essential for maintaining mental wellness.
Overcoming Challenges
The path to mental wellness is often uneven. There were challenging days when feelings of overwhelm crept back in, and old habits resurfaced. However, with the skills I acquired in therapy, I learned to address these challenges more effectively. For instance, I implemented weekly reflection sessions to assess my feelings and adjust my coping strategies as needed.
Celebrating Progress
As summer unfolded, I noticed significant changes in my mindset. I felt stronger and more resilient, better equipped to handle life's challenges. Each session at St Andrews Counselling was a step toward self-discovery and empowerment, enabling me to reframe my thoughts positively.
The Role of Community
A vital aspect of my journey was the support I found at St Andrews Counselling. This helped me reconnect with my supportive friends, which helped me feel less isolated.

As I embrace the warmth of Summer 2025, I am filled with hope and optimism. My journey with St Andrews Counselling has taught me that mental health support is an ongoing process. I am now committed to prioritising my well-being and seeking help whenever needed.

Therapy offers numerous benefits. It provides a safe space to explore thoughts and feelings. A therapist can help individuals develop coping strategies and gain insights into their behaviours. This process can lead to improved emotional regulation and a better understanding of oneself.
Building a Support Network
In addition to professional support, building a personal support network is vital. Friends, family, and community groups can offer encouragement and understanding. Engaging with others who share similar experiences can foster a sense of belonging and reduce feelings of isolation.
